Description

Ultramarine blue is the blue on most people's palette, a synthetic replacement to Lapis Lazuli it was created in the 19th Century in France, hence sometimes it is called French Ultramarine.

This one is made in France, with French walnut & linseed oil by a Frenchman, so pretty authentic!

To me there is tangible difference compared to a purely linseed version, it lends a beautful crisp transparency to the paint alongside the lack of fillers or extenders, this is the cleanest, clearest ultramarine blue in masstone I have used.

Leaning slightly towards red, it's tints with white are marvellous lilac tinged blues.

As you can see from the swatch, the transparency is taken to the highest level with the walnut oil and the high pigment load, it paints 'long' and is silky without being too loose.

Francois has made these paints handle beautifully.
