Description
This comes from a proper Northern landscape, ancient, damp and wild. The rock is hand dug, crushed, washed, sieved and ground into paint. It is therefore utterly unique.
Helwith Bridge is in the Yorkshire Dales (see photo opposite of the now defunct quarry), a place of great beauty, shifting weather, rock and an effervescent display of ever-changing greens, browns and yellows.
Made from crushed slate, this paint in masstone has a dark, green, earthy hue. It is very gritty in texture and these pieces of pigment sparkle slightly in the light, it is very subtle like dew on the grass. In tints, it produces rather green grays. A gentle tinter, I am finding mixing these earths on the canvas is very productive, you end up with an analogous palette of terrain with a real tangible quality of landscape.
