Description
Jaune Indien or Indian Yellow.
There are quite a few varieties of this colour, since the original Indian yellow is no longer produced, thankfully as it involved force-feeding cows mango leaves.
This version consists of two pigments: diarylide yellow - a modern, very lightfast warm yellow and transparent oxide red - a cornerstone of a pigment.
In masstone it is a warm, slightly muted orange - buttery in handling and standing up on the palette. Classed as opaque and spread thinly, the ground doesn't show through.
A strong tinter, when white is added, the large range of tints are seriously delightful soft orange hues. I could spend all day looking at those hues, so beautiful.
