Description
Kendal green is a combination of the natural pigments Weld and Indigo.
Both pigments are derived from plants and both have been used by humans as colouring agents for millenia. The Indigo plant is shown above with the pink flowers and the weld plant has the yellow flowers.
The paint straight from the tube is a deep, mossy, slightly cool green, smooth in handling (the swatch appears to show otherwise but it is super smooth!).
It is a good strong tinter compared to a green earth pigment paint and provides a wide range of tints when white is added.
The tints are a range greenish greys which would be extremely useful in figurative and landscape painting. It would be the perfect 'offset' against a warmer green like the Vert Gamboge from this range.
This is definitely one of my favourites out of this range of oil paints.
The pigment is produced traditionally by hand in small, sustainable amounts.
