Description

When refining the raw Lapis Lazuli stones into pigments, different grades are produced from the purest blues with very few other minerals present to greyer blues as the Lapis becomes less pure containing minerals like sparkling Iron pyrites.

This paint is made with so called Lapis ashes, it doesn't have the blue of the purer shades, but is in my opinion no less beautiful. It was used in the Northern Renaissance and referred to as 'grey ashes'.

In masstone, it is surprisingly dense with almost an indigo look to its hue, quite buttery in consistency.

It is gritty under the knife and once white is added its gentle nature is revealed, it gives a small range of tints, slightly blue purplish hues.

When I first came across this paint I thought Lapis ashes, well that is just the lowest grade of Lapis and I wasn't expecting much, however I am very pleasantly surprised with this paint, it's almost purplish leaning is rather special, it will work so well with the other shades of Lapis we offer.
