Description
A natural red iron oxide sourced from India (frequently now Indian reds are synthetic iron oxides) it almost has a violet edge but not without the punchy natural warmth you would expect - also known as Indian Red.
In masstone, a dark brickish red, fairly unassuming, however it is when white is added its value becomes apparent, creating a wide range of soft, warm violet hues.
The tints are really quite beautiful and a gift for the portrait/figurative painter.
Could also be used to subtly bring down the heat of a burnt sienna in the context of portrait painting.
It has good tint power, and is smoothly ground in cold pressed linseed oil
