Description
English red, beloved of portrait painters.
This version is made with the pigment PR102 which is a natural iron oxide rather than the more traditional PR101 which is a synthetic version.
In handling it feels very smooth, finely ground in French linseed oil.
This is English Red Light, meaning it leans more towards orange on the colour wheel than towards violet.
Its masstone is a vibrant earth red, not as orange as the swatch above suggests but it certainly has a lot of chroma and orange undertones. Strong in tints, providing a wide range of earthy pinks when white is added.
It is along the lines of a Venetian Red or Ercolano red. Another cracking addition to the Schaal range and really very much worth trying for the portrait/figurative painters out there.
